Belize Zoo
The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.
Shortly after the backyard "zoo" began, it was quickly realized that its Belizean visitors were unfamiliar with the different species of wildlife which shared their country. This very aspect fomented the comitment to develop the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center.
Today, The Belize Zoo is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were either orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions.
A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person.
The Belize Zoo believes that by bringing the people of Belize closer to the animals which are their natural heritage, they will feel proud of these special resources, and want to protect them for future generations.
The Belize Zoo recieves over 10,000 schoolchildren every year as part of the progressive education programs, and popular zoo events include: April the Tapir's birthday party; summer camps; Science Fair; Teacher Training; and Student Career Training.
The Belize Zoo is headquarters for the Tapir Specialist Group/IUCN/SSC, and also maintains an active captive breeding program for the green iguana, Iguana iguana.

Barranquilla Zoo
The Barranquilla Zoo had a discrete beginning on the 1930's, when Mr. Tomas Suri Salcedo gave away to the "Barranquilla Society of Public Improvements", (BSPI) a plot of land on the neighborhood of "El Prado", across from the Municipal Soccer Stadium. In that land, the BSPI developed a small park-nursery which started its animal collection with some doves which Mr. Roberto Puyana, president of the BSPI at the time, brought from its own home.
On August 1952, this park-nursery was relocated as a result of the city's urban development.
The new park, located at the corner of 77th Street and 58th Avenue (today 68th Av.) on the neighborhood of "La Concepcion, had some hectares of flat, undeveloped land, and it was named after Mr. Roberto Puyana, its enthusiastic founder, who dreamed of making Barranquilla, his adoptive home city, the "city of parks".
The park-nursery "Roberto Puyana" was officially inaugurated on February 1953. Its founder had in mind the development of either a Botanical Garden, a Zoological Park or a recreational park, all for the enjoyment of families, and to encourage admiration for the wonderful creations of nature.
In February of 1956, the Zoo was a reality. Plants from all over the world could be found on this park, planted to provide all city parks and boulevards with trees and bushes, and to give away to families who wished to decorate their house's facades.
It also had a wide variety of animals such as deers, rabbits, collared peccary, central american agouti, porcupines, foxes, fish, turtles, birds, parrots, macaws, parakeets, and many other species, 62 in total, mostly donated by the families, who had them as pets at their homes.
The Barranquilla BSPI named Mr. Ricardo Tinoco as the Zoo manager, who continued improving the Zoo facilities, giving such impulse and vitality to his work, which made him deserve the title of founder of the Barranquilla Zoo.
During his administration, Mr. Tinoco opened the Natural History Museum on the Zoo grounds, and named it "Armando Dugand Gneco Museum" in honor of this well known botanist from Barranquilla.
Between 1968 and 1975, the Barranquilla Zoo had the largest number of exotic animals, exchanged for native species of Colombia with the Zoos of Zurich, Lisbon, Barcelona and Miami, among others.
Throughout the 80's, managed by the "Empresas Publicas Municipales" (then Barranquilla's Utility Company) the Zoo falls into a deep crisis due to administrative and financial hardship. It was then when the National Institute of Natural Resources (INDERENA) examined the Zoo as the national environmental authority and determined that it had to be closed, since its condition would not allow for its adequate operation.
In 1993, a group of business people from Barranquilla, committed to the development of the city and worried with the problematic of the Zoo, presented a proposal to the city's government to create a non-profit Foundation, which would administer the Zoo for an initial period of 10 years, with the possibility of extending the time period, if agreed among both parts.
That same year the city's mayor approves the proposal. The Barranquilla Botanical and Zoological Foundation - Fundazoo is created and it starts operating the Zoo in August 3, 1993 as a non-profit organization. Fundazoos's founder members are:
At the time the Barranquilla Zoo's animal collection had 140 species and close to 551 individuals.
The Executive Director of Fundazoo begins a remodeling process of the Zoo to improve habitat conditions for the animal species and also the hygienic conditions for the visiting public. Based on this the Director:
Then follows the relocation of the Zoo's entry gate, the lion exhibit, the petting zoo, the remodeling of the veterinary clinic, which has also been equipped to take good care of the animal collection.
The herps exhibit, the small mammal exhibit, and the new exhibits for the manatee, the baboons, tigers, bears, otters, jaguars, eagles, spider monkeys, curassows and tamarins, were one by one built as part of the remodeling process that took place between 1997 and 2002.
Currently Fundazoo is working on the design of the new Chimpanzee exhibit, which will complete 85% of implementation of the Barranquilla Zoo's Remodeling Master Plan.
Besides, Fundazoo currently develops projects for the conservation of the Colombian wildlife, through environmental education programs and scientific research projects, to concentrate its efforts in the near future, on the conservation of native species of the Colombian Caribbean region.
MISSION
To support conservation of the biodiversity on the Colombian Caribbean region: animals, plants and ecosystems, through reproduction of endangered species, research, environmental education, development and adaptation of new technologies, and in situ work; integrating the work of environmental authorities, non-governmental organizations and the community, in order to maintain the balance of nature and protect biodiversity, helping people develop healthy relationships with their surrounding environment.
VISION
We will be recognized as facilitators of change, promoting a sense of respect towards the natural environment; we will become one of the leader institutions committed to the conservation of the biodiversity of the Colombian Caribbean region, and we will actively participate on processes of environmental character which develop in our country. We will widen our horizons to in situ work and for ex situ work we will have larger and more comfortable areas to meet the needs of the animal species, and places where the visitors can appreciate our animal collection on better environmental settings.

Amazoonica
The rainforest project Selva Viva owes its existence dem a lucky meeting of diffrent facts. Four people where taking part from the beginning: Christine and Siegfried von Steiger, Remigio Canelos and Angelika Raimann.
1990 Angelika travelled to the Ecuadorian Amazona area, to be in the tropical climate and to find a place for her doctor theses. She ended up at the Hotel Anaconda, that showed three important things: Wonderful primary rainforest, an owner who supports the research of the rainforest, and an indian forest guide Remigio, who knew more about the contexts of the eco-system rainforest than she knew after five year studies. Back in Switzeland she decided to do her theses in Ahuano, but for safety she wanted to clear some questions on the spot during three wekks. The cheapest way was, to work as a translater at the Anaconda.
By chance, Remigio and Angelika where guiding a pair of siblings named Christine and Rene Lazecki through the forest. The sympathy was on both sides, they kept in touch with eachother.Angelika moved definitely to Ecuador in July 1991, to start working on her theses. Soon after this, Christine Lazecki came again to the rainforest, together with her future husband Siegfried von Steiger. He was complaining, that there where no animals to be seen in this forest. And that everybody was talking about the protection of the rainforest but noone was actually doing something. Also Angelika complained, that it was even questionable if her examination areas in the forest would be still there un til the end of her field-studies, as the cutting down of trees went on very fast. At the end of the stay from Christine and Siegfried, the idea was born.
Christinewanted to build a zoo, that should be selfsufficient working under Remigios managemment after two years. And Sigi wanted to buy 200 acres of rainforest and put it under protection, therefopre Angelica would have her areas for examination quarantied. He wanted to found a cooperation for the protection of the rainforest (GSR) in Switzerland. Remigio liked the idea of a zoo, but even better would be an animal rescue center. It is the law in Ecuador, that the state confiscates wild animals, that are traded without permission or treated badly. But then, where to go with these animals? At this time it was common for the most jungle hotels to keep some animals under lousy conditions, to show them to the tourists. An animal rescue center would kill two bird with one stone: To be a home for the confiscated wild animals, and to give tourists the chance, to watch these animals in their natural surroundings. Christine charged Remigio and Angelika, to look for a suitable forest, and therefore in January 1993 the 39 acreas of the amazoonico where bought in the name of Christine von Steigers. Christine had a house built there, Remigio and Angelika where constructiong theirs beside.
After a year, the first tourists arrived. We already had the first animals, before the idea for amaZOOnicos was born. In 1994 the amaZOOnico was officially acknowledged from the state as an animal reschue center and is recieving animals (and controllers) since then.
Christine von Steiger was financing the amaZOOnico until August 1995, since then the station is living on the entrance fees, the income from the souvenirshop/bar , from donations of visitors and the amigos del amaZOOnico, a group of people from Europe. Concerning the forest, soon it was clear, that 200 acres where not ennough, to really protect the forest and the fauna. They where looking for more and more members, until they where 100(January 1999) and approx. 1100 acres had been under protection, partly owned by the GSR , private persons and the indiocommunity of Ahuano. The forest has been officilay acknowledged from the state as preserve Selva Viva in November 1995.
As there was never enough money from the GSR, to pay Angelica a salary, and the incom of the amaZOOnico where just enough for the food, Remigio and Angelika decided in summer 1998 , to build a Hotel, Liana Lodge, to earn their living and to cover part of the spent money from the project. Thanks to credits from relatives and friends the constructing could start in Oktober 1998. The hotel has been opened on the 1st of July 1999 with 24 beds. If things are going right, that means if there are enough guests, the hotel should be out of the "red numbers" after 5-6 Jahren aus den years, and should be able to support the financing of Selva Viva.
There is no lack of ideas, how to investigate the money: More rangers, education for guides, environment education at the schools of Ahuano, larger encklosures for the animals, breeding enclosures, an aguti-breeding project, a tree nurserey, planting of Mahogany trees...- the list could be enlarged endlessly!

The zoo officially opened its doors to the public on 1st January, 1952. Even before the zoo opened, animals were already being housed on the zoo grounds. Manatees have been living in the botanical gardens ponds since 1895! (Of course, the ones currently living in the ponds are not the original manatees!; they are the offspring). Two of the Harpy Eagles are the other long-term residents of the zoo. These raptors came here in 1952 - they sure are long-living birds!!
